Although Tottenham spent the closing hours of the last transfer window waving extraordinary sums of money at Spanish clubs in the hope of tempting one of them to part with their striker, it will be another playmaker that will be their priority over the summer.
Deadline day bids were made for the likes of Giuseppe Rossi and Diego Forlan and although they will be in the market for a striker Harry Redknapp also wants to seal a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s young star Mario Goetze. The 18-year-old has been in sublime form for the Bundesliga leaders this season with a number of assured displays highlighting a special maturity for one so young. Such has been his impact this campaign – in which he has scored four goals – that national team coach Joachim Low has called him up for the Germany squad to face Italy in Wednesday’s friendly.
While Spurs have a wealth of scheming midfielders on their books with the likes of Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Steven Pienaar and Rafael van der Vaart, Redknapp is keen to snap up a player he sees as being one of the very best in Europe. He will almost certainly face competition from Bayern Munich who have already expressed an interest in the player while both Chelsea and Manchester United have monitoring Goetze’s progress.
With the latest transfer window having seen players move in the Premier League for exorbitant sums Borussia Dortmund will hold out for a fee of at least £20m.
Mario Goetze undoubtedly has huge potential.
The technical director of the German Football Association Matthias Sammer said at the beginning of the season that the 18 year-old is “one of the best talents we’ve ever had”.
“He’s an exceptional player, has good speed, is extremely creative, and has outstanding technical skills.”
However, do Spurs need another attacking midfielder – and one at £20m for that?
Manchester United and Chelsea could certainly use a player of Goetze’s talents though, and perhaps their more consistent ability to compete at the highest level might convince the young German to move to either Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge.
