Bayern Munich were offered £35m by Chelsea for their highly-rated striker Mario Gomez last month as Liverpool pondered Fernando Torres’ move to Stamford Bridge.
The Bundesliga’s top scorer revealed on Wednesday that he could have been the striker lining up alongside Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka against Liverpool at the weekend, though he had no idea a bid had been tabled.
“I only found out about the offer after the club had turned it down,” the 25 year-old Germany international said.
“But it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. I am already at a top club and I am playing where I always wanted to.”
Chelsea instead ended up paying £50m for Torres just before the transfer window closed, smashing the British record.
Ironically, Liverpool also made enquiries to Bayern Munich as manager Kenny Dalglish looked to sign a replacement for the forward.

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has been in fantastic form this season – that much is undeniable.
He has scored 25 goals in 29 first team appearances, including 6 in 6 matches in the UEFA Champions League.
However, in the previous campaign he only managed 14 goals in all competitions, and was widely seen as a figure of ridicule – having become the most expensive Bundesliga transfer ever.
For that reason, Chelsea’s attempted signing of the German international would have to be viewed as a gamble, and their fans will be glad to have secured Torres instead, who is proven in the Premier League.
