Chris Smalling will start the Manchester derby on Saturday as Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans are ruled out through injury.
Smalling will play in his first derby, since joining from Fulham in the Summer, and will partner captain Nemanja Vidic in defence.
Ferdinand has failed to recover from the calf injury that ruled him out of the last weekend’s defeat to Wolves and the England friendly against Denmark.
The England captain is likely to be out for a few weeks meaning he faces a race to be fit for the Champions League clash with Marseille.
Evans is out with an ankle injury.
The Manchester United manager has given Smalling his total confidence and believes the England U21 international will handle the derby-day pressure
“Rio Ferdinand got a calf injury last week. He will be out for a couple of weeks,” said Ferguson.
“Jonny Evans was injured in training with Northern Ireland. He is out so Chris Smalling will play. I am sure he will do well.”
