Liverpool and Newcastle are set for a summer transfer tussle for Lille striker Gervinho, according to reports in France.
The Ivory Coast international was a January transfer target for a long list of clubs across Europe and Ligue Un table-toppers Lille wanted him to stay until the end of the season and fire them to the title.
But the Ivory Coast international is keen to test himself in another country so the club have now agreed to sell him in the summer.
Gervinho has hit 10 goals in 21 games so far this season and Newcastle have identified him as a long-term replacement for Andy Carroll, who joined Liverpool for £35m in January.
But the Reds are ready to disrupt Newcastle’s attacking options once again by making an offer of their own for the Lille star.
It is understood that the French club are willing to do business for around £10m.
Having purchased Andy Carroll from Newcastle United on deadline day it appears that the Anfield side now stands between Alan Pardew and a replacement for the England international. Liverpool would appear to have a strike pairing they would be happy with in the form of the Gateshead born youngster and former Ajax man Luis Suarez, but now Director of Football Damien Comolli is keen on bringing Gervinho to Merseyside in the summer.
St James’ Park boss Pardew has far bigger problems with his strike-force, having to bring in Finnish veteran Shefki Kuqi to help add to his fairly average contingent of Leon Best, Nile Rangers and Peter Lovenkrands with Shola Ameobi still sidelined with injury.
Gervinho has been in fine form this season, scoring ten and assisting another six to help his Lille side to the top of Ligue 1 and within site of their first title in over 50 years. The 23 year Ivory Coast international can play either as an out and out striker or out on the wing and is valued at a reasonable fee of £10m.
In fact it may be that Liverpool are eyeing up a move for the former Le Mans and Beveran man in order to play him out wide as the club could do with some natural width and as well as the two recent signings Kenny Dalglish also has the likes of Dirk Kuyt and David N’Gog to put up front if needed.
