West Ham have suffered a major setback in their attempt to avoid relegation with news that Robbie Keane will be out for six weeks with a calf injury.
The striker pulled a muscle in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by Birmingham and has not trained all week. He withdrew from the Republic of Ireland’s game with Wales as a result.
Keane is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur until the end of the season and scored on his West Ham debut in the 3-1 win at Blackpool.
But two matches in five days proved too much for the 30-year-old, who started just four games for Tottenham this season prior to joining the Hammers.
Keane’s injury is a massive blow for West Ham, who are bottom of the Premier League with just 12 games left.
Avram Grant’s side travel to fellow strugglers West Bromwich Albion tomorrow, a side against whom Keane has scored nine goals in 15 games.
