Chelsea have joined Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race for Sporting Gijon starlet Alex Serrano.
The 16-year-old striker is considered one of the brightest prospects in Spain after some free-scoring form for Gijon’s youth team.
He is not yet involved with the first team but the club are desperate not to lose him so early in his career at the club.
Serrano, the son of former Real Madrid and Sporting Gijon defender Mino, has now been linked with La Liga’s two biggest clubs, who are reportedly preparing summer bids.
But, according to reports in the Catalan press, Chelsea are closely monitoring the situation and could be ready to make an offer when Real or Barca make their move.
The Spoting Gijon striker Alex Serrano will fit perfectly into Roman Abramovich’s model of investing in youth.
But their tactics for acquiring youth players have caused controversy after the Gael Kakuta deal landed Chelsea with a transfer embargo two years ago.
More recently the Dutch FA have launched an investigation into Chelsea’s use of agents in bringing Nathan Ake to Stamford Bridge from Feyenoord.
But Chelsea does not have the best record in producing talent so even if Serrano does join the Blues, Chelsea fans may never see him play.
