Uefa have launched an investigation into the incident involving AC Milan’s Gennaro Gattuso and Tottenham’s Joe Jordan in Tuesday’s Champions League tie.
Spurs’ 1-0 win was marred by ugly scenes involving Gattuso head-butting the Tottenham assistant-manager.
Earlier in the match the pair clashed with the Italian pushing Jordan in the face.
Several players from both sides got involved in the ensuing melee.
Uefa’s Control and Disciplinary Body will meet next Monday to discuss the case.
Gattuso is already suspended for the return leg at White Hart Lane after picking up a yellow card on Tuesday but could now face a lengthier ban.
Two years ago Chelsea’s Didier Drogba was banned for four games for making inappropriate comment to the referee and Gattuso could expect a similar punishment.
Gattuso has since apologised for his actions.
“I lost control. There is no excuse for what I did. I take my responsibilities for that,” he said.
“I was nervous. I didn’t want to argue with players and I did it with him, but I was wrong to do what I have done.”
