Real Madrid will attempt to lure Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to the Bernabeu as Jose Mourinho looks to resolve his sides lack of effective attacking options. The La Liga giants are reportedly lining up a bid of €70 (£58m) for the 25 year old England international who earlier this season did threaten to leave Old Trafford.
Mourinho has seen his season greatly affected by the loss of Argentine international striker Gonzalo Higuain to injury, leaving Real Madrid having to count on faltering Karim Benzema to deliver the goalscoring goods, something the French international has steadily failed to do. Indeed the French international, who was previously a target of Sir Alex Ferguson’s back in his Lyon days, may be offered as a make-weight in any deal to land Rooney.
Emmanuel Adebayor has arrived on loan from Manchester City but Jose Mourinho has set his sights on Wayne Rooney as his ‘marquee’ signing target this summer, regardless of the fact that the former Everton man is having the leanest season of his Man United career, netting just six goals in 22 appearances, outscored by both Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez with 19 and 9 goals respectively.
Ferguson will look to reject advances for one of the club’s prized possessions but a lot could well depend on the player himself. Rooney angered many of his own supporters with his very public appeal to leave Man United back in October and it seems that there is still some animosity towards the striker for the way he seemingly held the club to ransom in order to secure a reported £250k a week contract.
Real Madrid are now willing to match that wage and hope that a move to the Spanish side appeals to Rooney, along with the chance to reunite with his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, a pairing that was hugely successful during their collective years at Man United.
