The Magpies are struggling to agree terms with the sprightly midfielder.
Joey Barton is a transfer target for Bundesliga outfit Hamburg as talks with Newcastle United on a contract extension fail to progress.
According to the Daily Mail, Barton agreed to take a pay cut in order to prolong his St. James’ Park stay by three seasons, but Newcastle are only willing to offer the player a two-year deal.
While tough-tackling Barton’s contract runs for another 18 months, Hamburg and Aston Villa are closely monitoring the situation.

£6m rated Joey Barton is one of many Newcastle United players reportedly wanting clarification on how Mike Ashley is looking to run the club. The likes of Jose Enrique and Jonas Gutierrez are apparently playing their cards close to their chests in relation to committing to the Magpies as they hope that the St James’ Park owner lets Alan Pardew use the cash from the Andy Carroll sale to help boost the club’s squad.
28 year old England hopeful may well feel a new challenge may help further enhance his chances of a Fabio Capello and of course a former Newcastle United man did very well at Hamburg in the past. Kevin Keegan spent three years at the club and won two Bundeliga titles in the process.
Hamburg are currently in seventh spot but just five points from the Champions League qualification spots and if they clinch a top three finish then a move may prove all the more tempting for the former Man City man.
Pardew would like to bring in some more creative midfielders to the club as well as some much needed fire power and a lot will depend on whether Mr. Ashley dips into his pockets this summer.
