Wesley Sneijder wanted by Chelsea, but too pricey for Manchester United
Wesley Sneijder is reported to be a summer transfer target for Chelsea, after it emerged Manchester United will not be able to afford him.
The 26-year-old was the star of Inter Milan’s Champions League triumph last season, but looks set to leave the San Siro when the transfer window reopens.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is keen to find a long-term replacement for Frank Lampard, having already brought in Fernando Torres and David Luiz as the successors to Didier Drogba and John Terry.
Sneijder, who enjoyed an outstanding World Cup as Netherlands reached the final, is apparently high on the Russian billionaire’s wanted list.
Although he has struggled for form this season, Inter president Massimo Moratti will put a £35 million price tag on the Dutchman, reports the Sunday Telegraph.
Could Chelsea really land Wesley Sneijder? It seems unlikely that the Dutchman would want to leave Inter Milan now that Leonardo is in charge and clearly something of a steadying influence following the sacking of Rafa Benitez. The talented playmaker had a terrific season last term and whilst this term he has been slightly off the boil the 26 year old is still rightly considered one of the most creative players in Europe.
Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich does appear to want to splash the cash and after bringing in David Luiz and Fernando Torres last month the Russian billionaire is ready to flex his financial muscles once again. This souce believes that the back bone of the team will be wrenched out in the coming months and whilst it is true that Carlo Ancelotti is looking to strengthen the Blues squad it does seem unlikely that Frank Lampard, John Terry and Didier Drogba will all be offloaded this summer.
However it does seem that some of the club’s ageing stars may be on their way out with the likes of Florent Malouda, Paul Ferreira and Nicolas Anelka also linked with exits from the Premier League champions.
