Manchester United will attempt to lure Tottenham playmaker Rafael van der Vaart to Old Trafford this summer. The Dutch international has been in fine form since his move to White Hart Lane last August and has become a pivotal part of the North London club’s successful Champions League campaign but Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to persuade the former Real Madrid man to move to the Premier League table toppers with the promise of being able to challenge for major honours.
Ferguson has already been linked with moves for Tottenham pair Luka Modric and Gareth Bale only to be told in no uncertain terms that neither player is for sale but that is unlikely to prevent the Man United boss from registering his interest in attacking midfielder van der Vaart.
The Manchester United boss is reportedly looking for a goalscoring midfielder to boost his sides creativity and has now earmarked a move for a player who arrived at Tottenham for a very modest fee of £8m and it is thought that Ferguson would be willing to pay three times that amount to sign the talented flair player.
Van der Vaart has taken to life in the Premier League instantly and managed to revive a career that had stagnated at the Bernabeu. Thus far this season the 28 year old has scored a dozen goals and assisted another seven.
In many ways Tottenham could prove a victim of their own success. Redknapp has taken a side who were struggling and turned them into a top four chasing outfit and if they fail to secure a Champions League spot this term then there may be stirrings of discontent that could lead to players seeking moves to clubs who can offer them the level of football they have become accustomed to taking part in.
Those who feel that it would be very hard for Man United to capture a player who has enjoyed a first season at their new club may want to see parallels with Sir Alex’s move to bring Eric Cantona from Leeds United after he had performed heroics at Elland Road after leading them to the title in his debut season at the club.
Manchester United are set to conduct something of a clearout this summer with Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen not likely to be offered new deals on completion of their current contracts and there is growing speculation that Gabriel Obertan, Bebe, Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck may also be leaving the club.
