Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish wants to bring Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton back to Merseyside.
The 28-year-old was born in Huyton and grew up in Liverpool, even having a trial at 14 with the Anfield club.
Dalglish sees the combative midfielder as a useful acquisition who can play in the middle or on the right-flank, according to Liverpool sources.
Barton’s current deal at Newcastle expires next year and contract negotiations have stalled as he wants assurances over the club’s ambitions.
If no agreement is reached, Newcastle will be looking to cash in on the player that helped regain their Premier League status.
The deal could see the end of Joe Cole’s career at the club.
The former West Ham and Chelsea player joined Liverpool on a free-transfer last summer but has struggled to settle since making the move north.
West Ham, Tottenham and Aston Villa would all be interested in acquiring the 29-year-old but may be put off by his £90,000 per week wages.
Liverpool are reportedly also considering offloading Milan Jovanovic, Christian Poulsen, Emiliano Insua and Paul Konchesky as Kenny Dalglish looks to reshape the squad he has inherited.
