Chelsea are lining up a £17.5million summer bid for Borussia Dortmund hotshot Lucas Barrios.
According to reports in his native Paraguay, Blues scouts have been keeping an eye on Barrios for the last few months and have been hugely impressed.
The 26-year-old has been instrumental in Dortmund’s surge to the top of the Bundesliga this season and is currently their top scorer with 11. Overall, Barrios has now scored 30 goals in just 51 starts since joining them in 2009.
As such, the club are desperate to keep hold of the striker but have recently confirmed that several clubs across Europe have enquired about a possible deal.
But so far they have insisted their £17.5m man is not for sale.
There appear to be quite a few sources who believe that Chelsea goal machine Didier Drogba will look to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after finding himself in the unaccustomed of being a bench warmer and a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios may well make a great deal of sense.
More or less the same age as Drogba was when he arrived at the West London club, 26 year old Paraguayan international Barrios may well be tempted by a move to Chelsea even though he appears to have helped his side to a Bundesliga triumph, perhaps the chance of earning a huge contract and a better crack at major European honours will appeal to the former Colo Colo striker.
Carlo Ancelotti has opted to play Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka in recent fixtures but the French international, like Drogba, is also nearing the tail end of his glittering career and a move for another attacking option may make a great deal of sense.
Barrios has been a big success since his arrival in Germany, netting 35 times in the past two seasons and his big physical presence may well lend itself well to the Premier League. Ancelotti and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich are looking to build a new generation of talent at the club and are more than able to make the kind of offer that may help them land the big centre forward.
Chelsea are also apparently looking to offload the likes of Jose Bosingwa, Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda this summer.
