Arsenal will bolster their striking options with the signing of Ola Toivonen from PSV Eindhoven.
With Robin Van Persie unable to complete a Premier League season due to his persistent injury problems, manager Arsene Wenger is keen to ensure he has as many alternatives as possible. Marouane Chamakh has provided another dimension to the Gunners’ attack though he perhaps lacks the ruthlessness in front of goal necessary to make him an automatic choice while Nicklas Bendtner continues to impress and frustrate in equal measure.
Toivonen has been catching the eye of Premier League scouts this season with his exploits in the Eredivisie. The Sweden international has notched 13 goals in 23 games as PSV top the division prompting interest from Liverpool though he has recentlyhit the headlines after being given a four-match suspension for elbowing another Arsenal target, Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen.
With Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll having switched to Anfield, Arsenal should have a free run on the striker who is not expected to cost much more than £7m.
Ola Toivonen is an adaptable attacking weapon who has been a huge part of PSV Eindhoven’s upturn in fortunes this term and as a result the 24 year old Swede has become a wanted man and like most successful Dutch Eredivisie players there is a certain amount of inevitability about his moving to another country to continue his career progression.
The former Malmo man has been a big hit at the Philips Stadion netting 32 goals in less than two seasons but the big front man can also play in the hole behind the strikers and has a good touch and an eye for goal, that said he may not be a player one would instantly associate with a move to Arsenal.
After all Toivonen would struggle to get regular football at the North London club, if indeed a deal was done, and in all likelihood he would find himself behind Robin Van Persie, Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner in the pecking order, so any deal may of course be more likely if Arsene Wenger elects to sell any of his attacking talent and to that end it does seem plausible that Mexican international Carlos Vela will leave.
