Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan ‘to be offered to Spurs for £40m in summer’
Atletico Madrid will approach Spurs to offer them star duo Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero for a combined fee of £40million when the transfer window reopens.
According to reports in Spain, cash-strapped Atletico are ready to sell their prized assets because of attitude problems and ‘personality clashes’ within the squad.
Forlan is rumoured to have been wanting out for some time while Aguero is said to have instructed his agent to negotiate a move away from Vicente Calderon after becoming disillusioned with life in the Spanish capital.
Aguero, 22, feels he cannot progress his career at the club – especially as they look set to miss out on European competition altogether next season.
He is also said to have privately identified Harry Redknapp as a manager he would like to work with.
Atletico rejected an offer from city rivals Real Madrid for Forlan, 31, in January, while both Chelsea and Spurs were rebuffed in their approaches for Aguero – valued at around £38million.
The latter even signed a new contract to demonstrate his willingness to remain – although it is believed a release clause would be activated if Atletico finish any lower than sixth in La Liga.
Harry Redknapp has continually stated his intention to refresh his attack and it appears that Atletico Madrid may finally be willing to do business and sell them Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan in a package deal that may well tempt the Tottenham boss.
Tottenham’s current crop of strikers have struggled badly on Premier League duty with Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch having netted just 11 goals from a combined 68 appearances, a figure that Rafael Van der Vaart has almost met on his own.
There were rumours that Forlan may be tempted by a money spinning move to Russia and it would seem that of this pair Redknapp would have more use for Argentine international Aguero than the 31 year old Uruguayan. One wonders what Atletico Madrid will do for goals if they sold these two, after all they have scored 180 goals between them over the past three and three quarter seasons!
