Arsene Wenger is monitoring the progress of £7m-rated Schalke striker Mario Gavranovic.
The German press claim the Swiss forward of Croatian origin will now be the subject of a summer bid from Arsenal.
Gavranovic, who has been a key figure in his club’s run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, has also been highly recommended to Wenger by Arsenal’s Swiss defender Johan Djourou.
The forward is eligible to play senior international football for Croatia or Switzerland having played nine times for the Swiss under-21 side.
So let’s analyse this shall we. “Gavranovic, who has been a key figure in the club’s run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League”. Well that isn’t really true is it. He has scored one goal in the competition and played one game, so hardly a ‘key part’ of their run. Also the young Swiss has played just six games in the Bundesliga and not scored a single goal.
May I suggest that this news story was thought up by the player’s agent? Even though Arsene Wenger likes to pick out rough diamonds and unknowns in order to polish them into household names, this rumour seems wholly unlikely.
There is no doubting that the Arsenal boss is looking for new additions but they are more likely to address defensive concerns. That said, the Gunners do have an issue with Robin Van Persie suffering a severe injury every season and Marouane Chamakh has dipped in form since a good start to the season. Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela may also be on their way out, but if the Arsenal manager does want to bring another striker to North London it won’t be this one.
