Manchester United will this summer look to lure Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena to Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long term replacement for Paul Scholes. The Premier League table toppers have been linked with moves for the likes of Javier Pastore and Luka Modric as possible alternatives but Ferguson is unwilling to give in to the huge financial demands needed to land either the Palermo or Tottenham stars.
French international Valbuena would cost significantly less than that pair and is valued in the region of £16m and is a player that the Man United boss has been monitoring for some time and after five seasons at the Stade Velodrome the pint sized box to box midfielder may well be ready to look for pastures new.
The 5ft 4in Marseille man was instrumental in helping Didier Deschamps side to the Ligue 1 title last term but the south of France club are now in fourth spot and any move for Valbuena is all the more likely to succeed if L’OM miss out on a Champions League spot.
Chelsea are also said to be keen on the 26 year old but Ferguson will be confident he can win the race for the diminutive midfielder as he looks to freshen his squad ahead of a reported clear out this summer. The likes of Gabriel Obertan, Bebe, Danny Welbeck and Jonny Evans have all been linked with moves away from the club and Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen are unlikely to be offered new deals as their current contracts end this summer.
