German manager Felix Magath will return to coach former club Wolfsburg just days after his departure from Schalke.
Magath previously led Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title in 2009, but left immediately afterwards.
The club are currently under threat of relegation, lying second from bottom of the table, with only eight games left to play this season.
“I was immediately on fire,” Magath said about the Wolfsburg deal, which will run until 2013.
Wolfsburg fired coach Steve McClaren in February. His assistant and successor Pierre Littbarski had lost four out of five games since then, leaving the club in the drop zone.
“It’s a precarious situation,” said chairman Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz. “Magath will prevent us from getting relegated.” (BBC Sport)
Maybe the sentence “I was immediately on fire” is lost in translation, unless of course Felix Magath is something of a pyromaniac. Either way it’s a good move for Wolfsburg to bring back the man who led the club to the title a couple of seasons ago. Soon enough the reign of Steve McClaren will all seem like a very bad dream..or a nightmare if you prefer.
