Rio Ferdinand is still available for England duty despite controversially losing the captaincy, according to a source close to the player.
BBC Sport revealed last week that boss Fabio Capello’s decision to return it to John Terry had upset Ferdinand.
It was suggested the defender, who has a long-term injury, was appalled by Capello’s off-hand treatment and considered his international future.
“Rio will never turn his back on England,” the source said.

This is good to hear. One could understand how angered and hurt the Manchester United man would feel after seeing the captaincy taken away from him and handed to a man that Fabio Capello had stated would never lead the country under his management. The issue is probably not so much the losing of the captain’s armband on a temporary basis, because with continued injuries that may always have been likely, but to have it taken away from him and given back to John Terry makes it almost look as though Rio was only ever a stop gap until the media throng died down.
Hopefully Ferdinand will be fit and raring to go soon as he always gave 100% when wearing the three lions.
