I was thinking as what I should do for my next article and I thought it would create an interesting debate if I chose my Premier League XI for this season, so far!
So here it goes. The obvious place to start is in goal and for me that has to be Ben Foster of Birmingham, he’s made the most saves this season and consistently plays at the highest level of his game which makes him invaluable to Alex Mcleish’s team and were finally seeing why Sir Alex Ferguson was so reluctant to let him go, he’s also England’s number 2 now which is just the measure of how far he’s come since the summer.
Now the defense, first off right back, there hasn’t been many who have stood out in this position but Rafael is one who has. For 20 years old he shows a lot of maturity in playing in a difficult position, he gets up and down the pitch with ease and it seems United have found Gary Neville’s replacement. My picks for centre half are Gary Cahill of Bolton Wanderers and Vincent Kompany of Manchester City, Komapny has really stepped up this season, he was a relatively low key buy for City but bar Tevez he is there most important player, he has powerful heading ability but has great pace for a defender of his height and at the age of 24 is one of the best young defenders in the world . Cahill on the other hand has been far more of a surprise package, his reading of the game and timing of tackles make him a sure bet that he will be an England regular in the coming years. Now there are a few great left backs in our league, most notably Ashley Cole, Patric Evra and Jose Enrique of Newcastle but my choice goes to Leighton Baines who’s constant running and pinpoint deliveries from open play and set-pieces makes him a threat to any team but works particularly well for Everton with the likes of Cahill, Saha and Fellaini to aim for.
There are a lot of options for midfield but I’m going with; Nani who has been in sensational form for Manchester United and hasn’t really looked back since Ronaldo left and is now Man U’s main source for creativity, Samir Nasri of Arsenal who like Nani has stepped it up from previous seasons. He has everything that a midfielder needs as well exquisite balance but is starting to add goals to game, crucial goal at that. Cheik Tiote of Newcastle United has been a revelation since his 3.5 million pound move from FC Twente, he has been likened to Michael Essien and I can see why, one of the best defensive midfielders in the league but with the capacity to pass accurately and who can forget that goal against Arsenal! Last but not least Gareth Bale of Tottenham, there was a point where Bale was seen as a bit of a curse to Tottenham because they never won when he started for but now he is the first name on the team sheet and with surging runs and that wicked left foot it’s a mix that no defender would want to face especially after his 2 games vs Inter Milan were he scored a hatrick, got 2 assists to his name and gave Macion, generally regarded as the best right back in the world a torrid time.
Now the good bit, the strikers! There has been so many with Dimitar Berbatov, DJ Campbell, Asamoah Gyan, Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez in particular all performing brilliantly but my two picks go too Rafael Van der vaart of Tottenham playing just off Carlos Tevez of Manchester City. For someone who only moved here on transfer deadline day Van der vaart has settled remarkably well, he might not have electrifying pace but he has a cultured left foot and that extra bit of quality Spurs needed going into a Champions League campaign. Now Man City might have a team of superstars who cost millions of pounds but the most important player is still without doubt Carlos Tevez. He plays upfront on his own most of the time and when City aren’t at there best he drives the team on with his non-stop running and willingness to work for the team which makes him a great captain but of course he has the quality to go with that which is quite rare to have both in a footballer these days.
So my pick for this seasons team of year is the following;
Rafael Cahill Kompany Baines
Nani Nasri Tiote Bale
Van der vaart
You may not agree with me but that’s my pick. Whats yours?
– I’m not going to name a subs bench because… well it’s just too hard.
