Emirates boss will offer cash plus a player in order to capture new ‘Patrick Vieira’.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is preparing a sensational hijack of Manchester United’s £20million transfer of Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell.
The Gunners boss is a known admirer of the 20-year-old and is determined to get the youngster to boost his midfield.
Wenger is prepared to offer £15million plus France international Abou Diaby, totalling the bid at £23million for a player the 61-year-old sees as the new Patrick Vieira.
But the Frenchman could afford to bid higher after the takeover of Stan Kroenke and the possible selling of captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona.
This could throw a spanner in the works of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson who thought he alrerady agreed a £20million deal with Everton counterpart David Moyes.
Ferguson has been publicly chasing Rodwell for the last few years and thought he had finally got his youngster this summer.
It is thought the box-to-box midfielder, who can also play at centre-back, would prefer a move to Old Trafford.
But Rodwell is tempted by Wenger’s commitment to playing youngsters and joining up with fellow England U21 team-mates Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott.
