Wembley’s U21 boss announces squad that are favourites to win this summer.
England U21 manager Stuart Perace has announced his provisional 40-man squad for this summer’s 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Denmark.
Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Liverpool’s Andy Carroll are the big-name inclusions in a very talented squad.
The inclusion of these two stars has been controversial as both their club managers say they should rest this summer instead of playing more football.
England will head into this summers tournament as favourites, due to its many established Premier League stars and fully capped players.
The 40-man provisional squad will eventually be whittled down to 23 by June 1 with the tournament commencing for England eleven days later.
Six of the 40 have all previously appeared for the England senior team: Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere, Jordan Henderson, Micah Richards and Kieran Gibbs.
Gibbs and Richards are joined by Manchester United’s Chris Smalling and Aston Villa’s loan-man Kyle Walker, both of whom have trained with the senior squad.
Chelsea starlet Josh McEachran is amongst a group of 15 midfielders named by Pearce, as are U21 regulars Jack Rodwell, Danny Rose and Fabrice Muamba.
Nine front men are vying for a pick in the final squad led by Carroll, Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge, who is currently on loan at Bolton Wanderers.
The U21 squad head to Denmark on 8 June to continue their preparations for what is an intense two week tournament featuring the very best of Europe’s young talent.
Having finished runners-up in 2009, Pearce has named a strong squad in the hope of going one better this time around.
England are also currently ranked number one in the UEFA European rankings, whilst they are the only side of the eight qualifying nations to have made it to their third consecutive Finals.
England start their campaign with a tricky fixture against Spain (12 June) before taking on Ukraine (15 June) and Czech Republic (19 June).
Prior to flying to Denmark, England will take on fellow finalists Norway in a Championship warm-up fixture at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on June 5.
