Emirates club have reportedly secured their first signing of the summer with Ricardo Alvarez set to arrive from Velez Sarsfield.
The Argentinian attacking midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season, and South American media are claiming he’s already signed a deal to take him to the Emirates in June.
The move would represent a significant coup for Arsene Wenger, as the 23-year-old has been likened to Lionel Messi after enjoying an impressive season in the Primera Division.
Velez Sarsfield are currently top of the Argentinian league and Alvarez has contributed three goals in 25 appearances, but it’s the attacking flair and silky dribbling of the 6ft 2in winger that’s really caught the eye.
Alvarez holds an Italian passport and can play across the entire midfield, suggesting one of Tomas Rosicky, Andrey Arshavin, or Carlos Vela will be headed for the exit door.
Wenger has pledged to strengthen his squad this summer and news of the potential capture of the little-known midfielder will come as no surprise to Gunners fans, who have become accustomed to obscure names arriving in north London.
This should come as good news for Arsenal fans as it shows that finally Mr.Wenger has begun to listen to the calls of the Arsenal fans and has at last started to strengthen the squad that once again came so close this season, just to throw it all away. The Arsenal boss has been clear about his desire to strengthen, however continued to reiterate that the club will not be held to ransom over transfer fees and wage demands.
Alvarez would be available on a free transfer which will delight the Arsenal boss and also keep the fans happy. However Arsenal fans should still be optimistic of more transfer activity. Alvarez is a versatile midfield player who is at home on the flank and at 6″2 should provide an aerial presence as well. Hopefully this signing is the first of many, but more importantly, Arsenal and other football fans are looking at the Defensive signings that Arsenal need to made this summer.
The news of Alvarez’s possible signature follows reports of squad players Denilson and Bendtner asking to leave the club, which has been met with huge cheers of joy by the majority of the Arsenal faithful. This could therefore be the Catalyst for significant transfer activity at the Emirates this summer, or the promotion of youth players such as Miyaichi, John Harper Toral and Emmanuel Frimpong. Either way this summer, events at the Emirates stadium are sure to create interesting topics of conversation.
