As Randy Lerner ponders whether Gerard Houllier can return to full-time management, we give him a hand writing his summer transfer wish list.
The season did not start well for Aston Villa and owner Randy Lerner.
Days before the 2010/11 campaign kicked off Martin O’Neill walked out on the club after a disagreement with the owner over transfer funds.
Kevin MacDonald took over with mixed results, and while he had the players’ support he was overlooked for ex-Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier.
The Frenchman brought in Gary McAllister as his number two and the pair did not get off to the best start amid rumours of training ground fights between players and coaches.
Relegation was becoming a genuine concern so Houllier controversially signed Darren Bent from Sunderland for £18million.
Houllier then suffered a recurrence of his heart problems and McAllister has taken over and secured some promising results.
Lerner now has to decide if Houllier can return but the decision must be made soon to allow the new guy to strengthen and tweak the squad.
Much will depend on Villa keeping hold of stars Ashley Young and Stewart Downing but other areas need to be freshened up, notably in goal, defence and the midfield.
Anyway, without further ado. Here are the ten names Lerner should be looking to sign.
Charles N’Zogbia (Wigan Athletic)
Perfect replacement for Ashley Young or Stewart Downing and can play at left-back too.
