Ewood Park youngster on his way to Old Trafford.
Blackburn defender Phil Jones is set to join Manchester United in a deal worth up to £17m.
The England Under-21 centre-half had a medical with the Premier League champions on Wednesday, after turning down offers from Arsenal and Liverpool.
Jones only made his Premier League debut in March last year but has made a big impact in his first full season.
The 19-year-old was due to travel to Denmark with the under-21s on Wednesday for the European Championship.
Jones will not find it easy to disrupt United’s first-choice centre-back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, while Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are also competing for places at the heart of Sir Alex Ferguson’s defence. (BBC Sport)
Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased he beat off all interested parties to sign Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones, the youngster has shown great potential at Ewood Park and he appears to be the latest in a line of youthful talents that the Old Trafford boss has turned to in order to build for the future, having brought in the likes of Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling last summer.
Jones is clearly one for the future but as the teenager has shown with Rovers, he is more than able to make an immediate impact. With Jonny Evans seemingly going backwards in the sense that the Northern Irish international has had some decidedly average performances and appears to lack confidence, the continued injury concerns Rio Ferdinand has, a move to reinforce the back line is a clever one.
There will be some who will claim that the price for Jones is excessive and whilst the general argument that buying British always seems to be an expensive exercise, in the case of the England Under 21 international such a debate will only be fair to debate in the fullness of time.
