Anfield boss keen to snap up Emirates Stadium contract rebel.
Liverpool target Arsenal’s Gaël Clichy after Jordan Henderson signing
Liverpool have followed the £20m signing of Jordan Henderson with a £5m offer for the Arsenal left-back, Gaël Clichy.
Kenny Dalglish is anxious to address a glaring weakness in his squad ahead of next season and, having considered the merits of both the Newcastle full-back Luis Enrique and Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre, has turned his attention towards Clichy. The French defender has rejected Arsenal’s offer of an extension to his contract, which has only 12 months remaining, and his employers are expected to cash in for around £5m-6m this summer rather than lose him on a free next year.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a host of European clubs since the breakdown over his contract extension and been touted as a possible makeweight in several deals being pursued by Arsène Wenger. Liverpool were forced to deploy Glen Johnson and 17-year-old Jack Robinson at left-back last season, with Dalglish offloading Paul Konchesky on loan to Nottingham Forest. They are awaiting a response from Arsenal on their approach. (Guardian)
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new left back appears to be nearing a resolution. Arsenal star Gael Clichy is no nearer to signing a new deal and as a result Arsene Wenger will opt to offload the French international this summer and appears to have no qualms about selling to a rival Premier League outfit, something he apparently will not allow Cesc Fabregas to replicate.
The fact that Arsenal have a ready made replacement in Kieran Gibbs and further back up with the likes of Armand Traore means that Wenger can afford to not give in to demands from the long serving Clichy and a move to Liverpool may well interest the 25 year old.
Clichy has been at the North London club for eight years, racking up over 250 appearances in the process. Last term was not one of his best but clearly the former Cannes man is still a very talented player that could resolve the left sided issues the Merseyside club has suffered for a few years now. The likes of Andrea Dossena and Emiliano Insua have failed to make the position their own and whilst the club has youngster Jack Robinson in the long term, the Anfield side clearly need a regular first choice option.
Wenger is struggling to keep a number of the club’s top performers this summer after another season failed to garner anything in the way of tangible success. The likes of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas have been strongly linked with moves away from the Emirates Stadium this season but it seems that losing Clichy is not such a pressing issue for the Arsenal boss.
