Villarreal star on Anfield radar.
Liverpool will look to continue their summer spending as they prepare an £18m bid for Villarreal winger Santi Cazorla. Anfield director of football Damien Comolli has identified the Spanish international as an ideal solution to the Merseyside club’s lack of natural width.
Cazorla is a regular part of the Spain’s international set-up and has been a consistent performer for Villarreal for the past four seasons and has been strongly linked with a move away from El Madrigal. The 26 year old is the latest winger linked with a move to the Merseyside club and is a player that Comolli believes may be the answer to the club’s problem wide area.
Liverpool have also been linked with moves for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing and Wigan’s French international Charles N’Zogbia but it is widely believed that another target, Ashley Young, will make his long awaited move to Man United in the next few days.
Villarreal have Cazorla tied down to a £28m release clause but may opt to sell the pint sized winger for less if he pushes for an exit, preferring to cash in on the long serving player rather than keeping a player at the club against their will.
Cazorla has racked up over 200 appearances for the Yellow Submarine and may feel that a high profile move will help secure a regular spot in the Spanish international starting eleven. Liverpool are reportedly keen to bring in out and out wingers to help provide the ammunition for strikers Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll.
Last term Dirk Kuyt and Maxi were the most used wide weapons but arguably neither are the ideal candidates for their positions, and indeed Dutch international Kuyt was more effective back in his striking role whereas Argentine Maxi’s form was very patchy though two hat-tricks towards the end of the season have made Dalglish re-think his opinion of the Atletico Madrid man who has largely disappointed since his arrival at the club.
