Old Trafford boss wants White Hart Lane star.
Sir Alex Ferguson is set to make a bid in the region of £35m for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric. The Man United boss is reportedly ready to make the offer after seeing Chelsea fail in their attempts to persuade the White Hart Lane to sell.
Ferguson is keen to beat interested parties to secure the signing of the Croatian international who he has been monitoring for some time as he looks to bring in a replacement for retired Man United star Paul Scholes. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has stated on a number of occasions that he has no intention of selling any of his prized assets but may be worried that his club’s failure to secure a Champions League berth could lead to the 25 year old being tempted by a move elsewhere.
Man United have previously shown interest in fellow Spurs team-mates Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart but now Ferguson is prepared to make a substantial offer for Modric and will hope that a deal can be completed to help boost creativity in a Old Trafford midfield that could well need such an addition.
Whilst Ferguson has the likes of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Anderson and Darron Gibson to call upon to fill his central midfield roles none of those options offer much in the way of a goal threat and Modric may well help to link midfield and attack.
The Premier League champions have also been linked with a move for Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder but Ferguson may feel a move for the Tottenham playmaker may be a more realistic proposition. Having already brought in Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones, Man United are also said to be closing in on keeper David de Gea and Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.
Ferguson has been promised significant funds to help build a new generation of talent after seeing a number of his squad bow out last season, Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville and Scholes all retiring, and the likes of Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand moving towards the end of their glittering careers.
To help accommodate new additions a number of players are said to be set for Old Trafford exits with Bebe already farmed out to Besiktas on a year long loan deal and Gibson, John O’Shea and Wes Brown linked with interest from Sunderland.
