Bernabeu midfielder on his way to Anfield?
Fernando Gago’s agent claims Liverpool would be “a perfect club” for the Real Madrid midfielder to continue his career after being told he is surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli is believed to have already opened talks with Gago’s representative, Marcelo Lombilla, regarding a possible move for the defensive midfielder.
Gago, 25, does not feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans for the new Primera Liga season and is reportedly keen on a move to Anfield after speaking to former Reds Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa about life on Merseyside.
Lombilla said: “Gago needs to play and Liverpool would be a perfect club for him, Fernando wants to get back on the pitch and return to the top level and at the moment that is not possible in Madrid.”
Real are believed to be demanding £15 million for the Argentina international but Liverpool are eager to secure a cut-price £10 million deal after splashing out £16 million on Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson.
There has also been interested from a number of other clubs and a source at Madrid told the Daily Star: “Fernando knows that he has no future at the club. There has been interest in the past from some Italian clubs and Aston Villa, but Liverpool have shown the most interest.”
By all accounts a deal has almost been agreed between Real Madrid and Liverpool on the price for the experienced Argentine international and the 25 year old is now in talks about his personal terms. Such a move may well mean that a member of the Anfield midfield is on their way out because clearly the capture of Fernando Gago, along with the signing of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, means that space in the first team is about to be squeezed.
The former Boca Juniors midfielder has been a bit part player at the Bernabeu since Jose Mourinho took over the reins at the La Liga giants and after four years at the club Gago appears very keen on a move to the Premier League where Liverpool appear to be his club of choice.
The hard tackling central midfielder was a virtual ever present in the Real Madrid side when they last one the domestic title back in 2007/08 when Bernd Schuster was in charge but has seen his first team chances gradually limited under Juande Ramos and Manuel Pellegrini and due to injuries and loss of form only managed four La Liga appearances last term.
Gago is a regular in the Argentine international team set up and has 30 caps to his name. Should he arrive at Anfield then it could be that Lucas is offloaded and the much improved Brazilian has been linked with a move back to his homeland. Raul Meireles has also been linked with a move away from Merseyside with interest said to be coming from Inter Milan, clearly the Portuguese international’s first team place is more under threat from the arrival of Henderson but if the club continues to pursue Charlie Adam then Kenny Dalglish may then look to make wholesale changes.
The fact that the Real Madrid man has been known to play at centre back may also interest Liverpool who have also been linked with Udinese defender Cristian Zapata.
