Old Trafford boss hopes to beat Chelsea to White Hart Lane playmaker signing.
DIMITAR BERBATOV may be used as bait by Sir Alex Ferguson in a bid to lure Luka Modric to Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson is a huge admirer of Luka Modric and has made the Tottenham star one of his main summer transfer targets.
Spurs are playing hardball over their prize asset after rejecting a £22m bid from Chelsea earlier this week as boss Harry Redknapp battles to keep him at White Hart Lane.
But this won’t deter Ferguson, who could now tempt Spurs with an offer of around £18m in cash plus Bulgarian star Berbatov in the hope of striking a deal.

Given that Luka Modric has now made it clear that he is ready to leave Tottenham then this offer, as reported by the source above, would surely tempt Harry Redknapp. The offer of an in form striker as well as cold hard cash for the services of the Croatian international will surely be of more interest than the £22m offered by arch rivals Chelsea.
Redknapp has repeatedly stated he has no intention of selling any of his big name stars and that includes Rafael Van der Vaart, Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Sandro, however now that Modric has spoken publicly of his desire to leave White Hart Lane, then the Spus boss may have little choice other than to look to cash in on the best offer on the table.
Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to bring in a creative midfielder and also wants to find a long term replacement for Paul Scholes and Modric is fairly similar in style to the Scholes of old. The Old Trafford boss is ready to offer £20m and Dimitar Berbatov, who’s value must be fairly high given that the Bulgarian international finished last season as joint top scorer in the Premier League.
Having already signed Phil Jones this summer, Ferguson is looking to bring in further additions and is ready to make room for new arrivals by offloading some of his under performing squad players such as Darron Gibson and Wes Brown who are said to interest Sunderland boss Steve Bruce who also fancies signing John O’Shea. Bebe has already been sent out on a year long loan to Besiktas.
