Rennes midfielder signs for St James’ Park side.
Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux has stressed that his transfer to Liverpool fell through because he could not agree personal terms with the Premier League side.
The former France Under-21 international appeared set to sign for the Reds on a free transfer from Rennes to put a couple of disappointing seasons, marred by injuries, behind him; but the move collapsed on Friday. (Goal.com)
Newcastle have signed midfielder Sylvain Marveaux from French club Rennes on a five-year deal.
The 25-year-old left-sided player had also been linked with Liverpool but will complete a move to St James’ Park for an undisclosed fee on 1 July.
Magpies manager Alan Pardew said: “It’s a coup to have signed Sylvain, who has had interest from a number of clubs.
“He may not be well known to many of our fans, but he is a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time.” (BBC Sport)
Alan Pardew has now successfully picked up three bargain buys this summer and whilst he may have lost Kevin Nolan to West Ham the Magpies boss arguably now has a stronger squad than when last season came to an end.
Sylvain Marveaux joins Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye and West Ham striker Demba Ba as new arrivals at St James’ Park and all three have arrived for free, which will clearly please owner Mike Ashley. There appears to be various stories doing the round about why Liverpool did not complete a deal to sign the Rennes man.
Some sources claim that the 25 year old failed a medical whilst others state that personal terms were not met. It seems highly unlikely that a player would fail one medical and then pass another hours later so it could simply be down to the offers the two clubs made for the services of the former French Under 21 international.
Newcastle United have handed the adaptable midfielder a five year deal as Marveaux ran down his Rennes contract after ten years at the club. Pardew will hope that he can add more creativity to a midfield that may see further exits with the likes of Jonas Gutierrez and Joey Barton both linked with moves away from the club.
