Gunners fans, say hello to a new Emirates Stadium signing…apparently.
ARSENE WENGER is weighing up the most astonishing transfer swoop of the summer … for Joey Barton.
The Arsenal manager has finally accepted the need to inject some bite and experience into his team of perennial underachievers.
And the Newcastle bad boy’s ability to tick both boxes means he is very much a candidate for the Frenchman. Wenger has been discussing Barton with senior members of his staff.
Wenger must now decide whether or not to follow up his initial interest with a firm offer for Barton, who is available for around £1.5million.
The midfielder has one year left to run on his £65,000-a-week contract at Newcastle but he has been told he will not be offered another deal.
So the club, who last week parted with Kevin Nolan, are open to offers while they can still get a fee.
And despite his repeated desire to stay at St James’ Park, at the same time Nolan left, Barton admitted he would have to consider a move himself if a Champions League club came knocking.
He said: “I don’t want to leave Newcastle, my family’s settled in the area, I’ve got a great working relationship with everybody at the club.
“But if someone came in and, hypothetically, offered me Champions League football, whether I’d signed a five, six or seven-year deal at Newcastle, I’d have to consider it.”

Could this really happen or has this source just plucked this from thin air? Joey Barton is hardly a ‘Wenger-style’ player but that said the Newcastle United man had a good season last term and would be available for a nominal fee. The former Man City man has already stated that he expects to leave St James’ Park after failing to agree a new deal to stay at the Magpies.
Whilst Arsenal may be looking for more bite in their midfield they may elect to look elsewhere whilst also hoping that Alex Song ups his game and fulfills the undoubted potential the Cameroon international possesses.
28 year old midfielder Barton has definitely taken the crazy edge out of his game, gone are the days when Joey would lose the ball and then look to execute some revenge. Indeed the Huyton born one cap England international probably had one of his best performances when he helped Newcastle United back from 4-0 down to clinch a dramatic 4-4 draw with Arsenal back in February.
Alan Pardew has brought in three freebie signings already this summer and the arrivals of Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux and Demba Ba could mean that a number of players follow Kevin Nolan out the St James’ Park exit.
Arsenal on the other hand know they have to invest in their Emirates Stadium squad in order to appease their fans after six silverware-less seasons. The club is hoping to avoid losing Samir Nasri or Cesc Fabregas, both of whom appear to have now committed to staying at the club. However contract rebel Gael Clichy is reportedly closing in on a move to Roma.
