Emirates boss contemplates move for St James’ Park stars.
Arsenal are on the verge of making a £7million bid for Newcastle United stars Joey Barton and Jose Enrique.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to add experience to his squad and hopes the pair could add more steel to his current crop of talented youngsters.
Both Barton and Enrique have only one-year left on their contracts and rejected new deals.
Wenger wants Enrique, 25, to replace left-back Gael Clichy and have held talks with his agent about a summer move, according to The Times.
The France international looks likely to join Roma, after the North London club rejected a £5million offer from Liverpool.
Barton, 28, could also be moving to the Emirates after revealing his ambitions to play Champions League football.
The move could be in doubt with Barton’s violent history potentially counting against him.
The French contingent in the squad will not welcome the Huyton-born England international with open arms following the assault on Ousmane Dabo in 2007.
Despite his repeated desire to stay at St James’ Park, Barton admits he would have to consider a move himself if a Champions League club came knocking.
“I don’t want to leave Newcastle, my family’s settled in the area, I’ve got a great working relationship with everybody at the club,” he said.
“But if someone came in and, hypothetically, offered me Champions League football, whether I’d signed a five, six or seven-year deal at Newcastle, I’d have to consider it.”
