Villa Park boss will move for Ibrox shot-stopper.
Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish wants Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor as his new number one.
The 29-year-old is wanted to replace Brad Friedel, who joined Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month on a two-year deal.
McLeish is in the marker for a new shot-stopper and has been linked with his former keeper at Birmingham City, Ben Foster, and West Ham United’s Robert Green.
McGregor has been on Villa’s wish list for a while, with McLeish’s predecessor also keen on signing the Scotland international.
‘Big ‘Eck’ will scout a number of goalkeeper before making a bid and is hopeful Carlos Cuellar will stay at the club.
“We do need a goalkeeper and there’s a number of names I’ve got in mind,” McLeish said. “Alan is a good keeper, but agents are bombarding me with hundreds of names.
“Carlos has an injury and the physios will keep me up to date as to when he will be ready again,” he added.
“I know there is interest from Rangers, but it may be we will have to keep Carlos and he has to fight for his place again. Every player will start with a clean slate.”
