Old Trafford boss interested in Honduras international.
Celtic fullback Emilio Izaguirre says he was wanted by Manchester United in January.
He was recently linked with United’s arch-rivals Liverpool and revealed he was ‘flattered’ by the interest being shown by the Anfield club.
“I am aware that Manchester United and Celtic agreed for a meeting in July,” said Izaguirre in Honduras. “We have to see what happens if I stay or I go.
“I have to confirm it’s 100% true that Manchester United were following me and were interested in me in January.
“It was Alex Ferguson directly who made contact with the Celtic directors.”
“If I have the chance I welcome the move with open arms. If that is the case I will thank God and I will take my opportunity.”
Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in the talented attack minded Honduras international is not that surprising but one wonders if such a signing is needed. Given that Patrice Evra appears to be staying put, after rumours of a move to Real Madrid were put to bed, and with Brazilian youngster Fabio as a back up and one very much for the future, where would Emilio Izaguirre fit in?
Perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson would be working towards adding even more strength in depth or considering playing Fabio in a more advanced role, either way Celtic will find it hard to prevent the 25 year old Izaguirre from leaving Parkhead if interest turned into an offer from the Premier League champions.
Izaguirre had a terrific first season in Scotland last term where he racked up 42 appearances in all competitions and won a mountain of awards including the SPFA Player of the Year and Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year awards.
Neil Lennon would not want to lose a player who made such an immediate impact but should Ferguson may a decent enough offer it seems unlikely the Glasgow side would stand in the way of a move to Old Trafford.
Man United boss Ferguson is keen to complete a number of signings this summer and has already nabbed Phil Jones and Ashley Young and is close to agreeing a deal to bring Atletico Madrid keeper David de Gea to the club to act as a long term replacement for retired keeper Edwin van der Sar.
Ferguson is also looking to remove a number of players from his squad in order to make way for these new signings and the likes of Darron Gibson, Jonny Evans, John O’Shea and Wes Brown are strongly linked with exits and much maligned striker Bebe has already been sent out on a year long loan deal to Besiktas.
