Scottish Under 21 international will not be axed over offences.
Charity Children 1st has called for Hearts player Craig Thomson to be sacked after he was put on the sex offenders register.
The 20-year-old has been convicted for indecent behaviour towards two girls aged 12 and 14 on the internet.
The club said they were keeping the player as there were mitigating circumstances which provided assurance his conduct would not be repeated.
Children 1st insisted Hearts need to look again at the issue.
The charity’s policy manager Kate Higgins told BBC Radio 5 live: “We believe that Hearts football club needs to look again at this situation, not taking action to protect children from the risk of sexual harm is unacceptable.
“Allowing convicted sex offenders to continue working where they will have direct and indirect contact with children is wrong.”
Thomson was placed on the sex offenders register earlier this month after pleading guilty to two charges of indecent behaviour.
He was also fined £4,000 for his lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour towards two girls, aged 12 and 14, over the internet.
Hearts said it would go through the “necessary internal procedures relating to the case”.

It’s interesting that Hearts would claim that Thomson’s behaviour was a ‘grave error of judgement’ given that the right back committed the offence on two separate occasions.
David McLetchie, a Conservative MSP and Hearts fan, stated “I am surprised given the seedy and unsavoury nature of his offences,” he said. “The fact that the club places a high value on the work that it does with the community and the fact that footballers are supposed to aspire to be role models for young people – I do find it surprising.”
The mother of the 12-year-old girl the Sunday Mail: “They are meant to be a family club. Surely, they’ve got to sack him.
“It is ludicrous. It astounds me that this is the position they have taken in the face of what he did.
“After all, when you strip away all of the football stuff and forget he is a Hearts player, this is a simple case of young girls being abused by an older man.”
Expect Thomson, rightly, to be the subject of a great deal of abuse from the terraces due to his actions.
