Emirates boss not keen on letting star go to Anfield.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger isistis they are doing everything possible to keep defender Gael Clichy at the Emirates and out of the clutches of Liverpool.
The 25-year-old has 12 months left of his Gunners deal and rejected all new offers so far to remain in North London.
The France international’s contract situation has attracted Liverpool and and Roma, with the Arsenal boss much happier to sell him abroad rather than to a league rival.
But Wenger has revealed the club have re-opened discussions with Clichy about signing a new deal and hopes he can be persuaded to stay.
“We have started talks with Gael and want him to stay,” said Wenger.
Arsenal have looked at other options to fill the left-back position with Newcastle United’s Jose Enrique and Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre both candidates.
But the quest for an experienced centre-back continues to prove a source of frustration.
Blackburn Rovers are holding out for an increased fee for captain Christopher Samba, with Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Everton’s Phil Jagielka other options, if likely to be more expensive.
