Adaptable Old Trafford veteran wanted by Anfield boss.
Liverpool continue to be linked with Manchester United defender John O’Shea.
The Republic of Ireland international has held talks with Sunderland and accepted personal terms, but is also considering other offers.
The Irish Daily Star says Celtic manager Neil Lennon has thrown his hat into the ring for O’Shea.
Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa are also all battling for the Irishman’s signature.
Man United veteran John O’Shea is tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer after amassing over 390 appearances during his ten years in the first team. Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to trim his squad’s wage bill and is therefore looking to cut costs where he feels he can do without upsetting the harmony of his Premier League winning squad.
The Irish international is already apparently in talks with former Man United defender Steve Bruce who wants to bring the adaptable defender to the Stadium of Light, however Liverpool continue to be linked with the Waterford born player.
If this report is accurate then clearly Kenny Dalglish doesn’t care if a target plies his trade with an arch rival and on that count he should be applauded. O’Shea, although clearly no spring chicken, could offer an adaptable option and a cheap one as well.
Liverpool are looking to beef up their back line and O’Shea’s ability to play at centre back may be of more use to the Anfield side than at right back, where Dalglish has Glen Johnson and impressive youngster Martin Kelly to call upon.
At centre back however, two of Liverpool’s options are getting on a bit, Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos and also have to take into account injury prone Danish international Daniel Agger. O’Shea can also play at left back, and that really is an area that the Merseyside club needs to take care of.
Having pursued the likes of Gael Clichy and Jose Enrique, Liverpool are still without a new signing to fill in as first choice left back. O’Shea can also play as a defensive midfielder.
Rated at around £6m, O’Shea may however be keen to make a move to Celtic to pursue a new challenge to his career. Neil Lennon would dearly love to nab a player with as much experience as the Man United man has on his CV.
Aston Villa and Tottenham are also monitoring the situation.
