Old Trafford club want San Siro hero.
Manchester United still believe they can capture Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder for a club record £40million, despite the Italian side confident he will stay.
The Red Devils are searching for a replacement for the legendary Paul Scholes and are keeping tabs on Tottenham’s Luka Modric and Arsenal star Samir Nasri.
Boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a huge admirer of the Holland international and believes he is the key to usurping Barcelona as the best club in Europe.
Sneijder has four years left on his current contract but this has not stopped both United and Chelsea in declaring their interest.
Inter manager Gian Piero Gasperini is sure the 27-year-old will stay at the San Siro but holds no fear should the playmaker leave the club.
“I have no doubt that Sneijder is a great player,” Gasperini said at his first press conference as Inter coach.
“It’s difficult to know what can happen in the next 50 days of the transfer market. Inter want to become even stronger.
“Two years ago (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic left the club but the team was strengthened and became even stronger.
“Wesley’s situation does not worry me.
“In recent years, Inter have made fewer mistakes in the transfer market than other clubs and have made the best choices. Hence, I can only be optimistic.”
Meanwhile, Gasperini did not confirm or deny reports in the Italian media that Inter have signed Argentinian midfielder Ricardo Alvarez from Velez Sarsfield.
Alvarez is also a reported target of Arsenal and Roma.
“Alvarez is a great player,” said Gasperini. “In the case he did come to Inter, it would be an important addition.”
