Anfield move on the cards for Villa Park wide-man.
Sky Sports sources understand Stewart Downing would prefer to join Liverpool, despite interest from Arsenal, and the deal could be finalised on Monday.
The Aston Villa winger was the subject of a £15million bid from Liverpool on Wednesday, but the offer was immediately rejected by Villa Park owner Randy Lerner.
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, who could lose Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas this summer, are thought to have attempted to hijack their Premier League rivals with an £18million bid.
But England winger Downing has set his mind on a move to Anfield and Liverpool are negotiating a price to buy a player who has two years remaining on his current contract.

So there you have it. Sky Sports believe a deal to bring the England international to Anfield is near. The Aston Villa winger appears to favour a move to Liverpool over Arsenal and perhaps having seen the likes of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam make the move, feels that the Merseyside club are on course to break back into the Champions League race.
Kenny Dalglish appears to be keen on bringing more natural wide options to the club after using the likes of Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez, Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic last term. Downing has had two consistent seasons at Aston Villa following his big money move from Middlesbrough back in the summer of 2009.
Downing is now a regular in Fabio Capello’s England set up and has been pushing for a move since the arrival of Alex McLeish as boss. Having already lost Brad Friedel and Ashley Young to Tottenham and Man United respectively the Scot would have hoped to keep the 26 year old but seems destined to lose the left winger.
Apparently McLeish is already prepared to bid for Wigan’s French international Charles N’Zogbia as a replacement for Downing over the next few days.
