Anfield legend backs club to return to former glories.
Liverpool legend and Match of the Day pundit Mark Lawrenson has promised to grow his infamous moustache back if the Reds win the Premier League this season.
But the Kop idol believes he will not have to go through with his vow although he sees the club moving in the right direction with manager Kenny Dalglish at the helm.
‘Lawro’ says the transfer deals Liverpool have done since January will catapult them back into the Champions League at the expense of rivals Arsenal.
January saw the arrivals of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll for £57million while stars Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel were sold for £56million.
This summer Dalglish has again been busy in the market bringing in Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing for an initial £45million.
Lawrenson thinks these signings will help return Liverpool to their former glories but the club is still short in a few areas to push for the title this season.
“If Liverpool win the League I will grow the moustache back but I think I’ll be all right,” Lawrenson said to Caughtoffside.
“But I’d better warn Kenny because there will a headline and he will be on the phone giving me a earful.
“Liverpool have a chance of finishing in the top four but I don’t think they can win the league because they are a bit short and not as good as Manchester City, Man United and arguably Chelsea but they are as good, if not better than Arsenal.
“Especially if Arsenal lose a couple more they have a really good chance of finishing fourth.
“Take it back to January and you look at Suarez, Carroll, Henderson, Adam and Downing, Liverpool have got five players for £45m because they sold Torres and Babel.
“You might say he overpaid for Downing and Henderson but £45m for five players is very good. They are all quality and will all get better and I think they have been really shrewd.
“They still need a left-back, centre-back and possibly a striker, to cover for Suarez, who has played non-stop football for 18 months.
“Rodallega at Wigan is a possibility if there is any money left. He might have to get a few out before he can get anyone in.”
