Anfield hero lays blame on on FA for England’s failings.
England will never win a major tournament because of the Football Association, according to Match Of The Day pundit Mark Lawrenson.
The Three Lions once again were knocked out early in last summer’s World Cup suffering an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to rivals Germany.
Manager Fabio Capello said his players were tired and wanted the FA to introduce a winter break, which Lawrenson is a believer in, but nothing has happened.
The U21s, favourites to win the European Championships in Denmark last month, could not progress out of the group stages.
Lawrenson believes the England stars suffer from fatigue and the success of 1966 will not be repeated until the FA give the players a chance to recuperate fully.
“England will qualify for the Euros but they won’t win it,” he told Caughtoffside. “They cant do tournaments. It is a mentality thing.
“Capello said he shouldn’t have trained them so hard before the World Cup and that was massive.
“We have the best league, play more competitive games than any other league, two cup competitions and if they are not playing in England they are off in the Far East.
“England players were dead on their feet at the World Cup. If they do qualify I hope Capello says have 10 days holiday. That might help.
“I think the FA need to look at themselves.
“Their five star hotel was actually a prison. All the talk of security need to be eased off. They need to be more people friendly, fan friendly.
“I’m a fan of a winter break but more of a fan of two less teams in the Premier League and one less cup competition but that will never happen.
“But until they try these things it will be the same old, same old.”
