Anfield boss keen on Etihad Stadium winger.
Liverpool are reportedly interested in Man City winger Adam Johnson and Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish is ready to make an offer for the 24 year old who is said to be unhappy at his lack of regular first team football. The former Middlesbrough star started just 15 Premier League matches last season and may feel a move away from the Etihad Stadium would help guarantee the regular starts that could help advance his international career.
Having brought in Aston Villa star Stewart Downing to ply his trade on the left flank there is much speculation that Liverpool will look to add more natural width down the right, a position that has in the main been filled in by makeshift wide-man Dirk Kuyt, who was converted from an orthodox striker into a winger by Rafa Benitez some years back.
Whilst Kuyt has at times been effective in this role it is still felt that the Dutch international is very much a round peg shoved into a square hole and Dalglish is keen to add more balance to his attack and is known for his penchant for old fashioned style wingers.
Liverpool have already spent over £50m this summer on four signings and the captures of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Downing and Doni have greatly improved the club’s squad but Dalglish is still looking for new additions as he looks to push the Merseyside club back into the top four race.
Whilst it may well be tough to persuade Roberto Mancini to sell to a rival Premier League club the Italian may be ready to offload some of his side’s expansive squad, especially following the big money signing of Sergio Aguero, which is said to have cost Man City £90m in transfer fees and wage demands.
Adam Johnson has in the past fallen out with Mancini over his constant bench warming and having spent more time on the bench last season than on the field of play, it would appear that Man City can afford to lose a player who is by no means a first choice starter.
Dalglish is also urgently looking to bring in defensive reinforcements having seen his back line severely compromised in pre-season activities. Liverpool have conceded 12 goals in four matches, including three at Championship side Hull City.
A number of centre backs have been linked with a move to Anfield, most prominent being the club’s apparent interest in Birmingham City’s Scott Dann.
