Ligue 1 big spenders want Old Trafford star.
French side Paris Saint-Germain are ready to offer €20m (£17.5m) for Man United striker Dimitar Berbatov as the Ligue 1 side look to continue their summer spending after receiving a significant financial boost following the club’s takeover by the Qatar Investment Authority.
New Parc des Prince Director of Football Leonardo believes that the Bulgarian international is the ideal man to lead the line at PSG as they look for instant success and at the very least a top three finish so as to achieve Champions League qualification.
Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to keep Berbatov at Old Trafford but the former Tottenham man may be tempted by a move to Paris, especially as PSG are able to offer him a huge wage hike and more importantly regular first team football, something the striker may struggle to secure at Man United.
Dimitar Berbatov was said to have been devastated at missing out on a place in the Champions League final squad and may feel that he has little hope of proving his worth to Ferguson is he failed to impress the Scot during a season where he finished as the Premier League’s joint top scorer.
Given that Berbatov has just a year left on his current contract and that no new offer is on the table there would appear to be a very real chance that a good offer may be considered by both the club and the player.
Sir Alex Ferguson has made it clear that his preferred strike pairing is Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney and at Berbatov’s age he will not want to be wasting away on the bench and may feel he has one more big move to make in his career.
PSG have spent a great deal this summer already and have brought in a number of high profile signings. Kevin Gameiro has arrived from Lorient after finishing the last two seasons as runner up in top goalscorers table. Former Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko was brought in from Juventus and winger Jeremy Menez from Roma and boss Antoine Kombouaré has been told there are still significant funds available for further acquisitions.
