Emirates skipper to finally get match fit ahead of Nou Camp move.
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is set to feature in the club’s final pre-season match against Benfica as his transfer to Barcelona drags on.
The 24-year-old has been the subject of the summer’s longest running saga with the Gunners refusing to lower their £40million valuation, while the Catalans will not raise their £27million offer.
The Spain international is keen on returning to Barcelona but will not go against the wishes of the club that made him a star.
The two sides are continuing to negotiate over a deal but Arsenal have set a dealine of August 16 to settle the matter.
This is when Arsenal will play in the Champions League qualifier and if Fabregas plays he will be ineligible to play in Barca’s European campaign.
With the transfer expected to rumble on, Fabregas is now prepared to participate in Arsenal’s final game before the season starts to get some much needed match practice.
The World Cup winner has not played since the Spanish and European champions knocked the Gunners out of the Champions League in March.
He has played no part in Arsenal’s warm-up games thus far due to injury and manager Arsene Wenger cited his attitude not being right to play.
But Fabregas understands the importance of being match fit for the new season so will declare himself available for the Benfica tie, and the opening game of the season against Newcastle.
