White Hart Lane hero out for six weeks.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Steven Pienaar has been ruled for six weeks with a groin injury.
The 29-year-old will miss at least eight games, including this weekend’s opener against Everton, as he will be undergoing surgery.
The South Africa captain was injured during Spurs’ final pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
He would also miss meetings with Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as the Europa League play-off tie against Hearts and the opening group match should they qualify.
Spurs have plenty of options in midfield and should cope with his absence.
Pienaar has battled with Gareth Bale on the left wing ever since his January move from Everton.
“Following scans and consultation with an independent groin specialist, Steven Pienaar underwent groin surgery this morning,” a Tottenham statement read on the club’s website.
“The South Africa international was forced off with the injury in the first half of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao and is expected to be sidelined with the injury for up to six weeks.”
