Anfield boss looks to resolve defensive problems.
Liverpool have stolen ahead of Arsenal in the pursuit of Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill.
According to ESPN, the Merseyside club have offered £12m and French striker David Ngog in part exchange in order to bring Cahill to Anfield.
With Jamie Carragher in the twilight of his career, it is only natural that Kenny Dalglish is looking for his successor, but it may come as somewhat of a surprise that he is not looking to promote from within.
While Martin Kelly cut his teeth for Liverpool last season at right back, it is widely believed that he will ultimately ply his trade in the centre of the defence – and of course Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger offer more experienced options when fit.
Gary Cahill is a proven centre half at Premier League and international level. He would be a risk free signing even at such a price, while there has been a feeling within the Liverpool hierarchy that David Ngog would not make the grade as a 20 goal per season man at a top club.
Having spent over £50m to bring in Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Doni, Jordan Henderson and Jose Enrique it appears that Kenny Dalglish has one last move to make in this summer’s transfer window and that is to bring in a player to beef up his central defensive options and a move to bring in England international Gary Cahill would be a wise one.
Last season Liverpool conceded their most Premier League goals in over a decade and then followed that up by conceding 15 goals in five pre-season fixtures, so clearly there is a problem to resolve. The Anfield side have reportedly been interested in a number of potential centre back signings including Scott Dann, Per Mertesacker and Christopher Samba but now appear keen to use a Bolton target to help land Cahill.
Owen Coyle is apparently interested in Frenchman David N’Gog and having lost Johan Elmander and not managed to bring Daniel Sturridge back on another loan deal, the Trotters boss needs extra firepower and this deal may appeal to the Reebok Stadium boss.
Bolton have openly stated that they will accept the right offer for their 25 year old defender and this cash plus player swap deal may just trump other bids for the former Aston Villa man.
