Anfield side want Stamford Bridge international.
Liverpool have held unofficial talks with Chelsea representatives over a proposed £12million move for defender Alex.
The Reds have switched their attention to the Brazil international after admitting defeat in their attempts to prize away Ryan Shawcross from Stoke City.
Manager Kenny Dalglish was very keen on bringing the Potters captain to Anfield and had offered £10million for the 23-year-old.
Stoke are sticking to their £18million valuation but Dalglish does not have the transfer funds available.
He could free up some extra cash if he can sell some of his fringe stars and will listen to offers for Alberto Aquilani and Joe Cole.
If Dalglish cannot sell the unwanted players he will make his move for Alex.
It is understood the Reds boss is aware the transfer window is closing and will abandon his policy of buying youngsters to strengthen his defence.
Liverpool’s back four have come under scrutiny following poor displays in pre-season and with Daniel Agger’s injury problems, worries over cover have emerged.
Dalglish became aware of Alex’s availability because of reports linking the 29-year-old with a switch to Juventus. Arsenal are also monitoring the situation.
