Upton Park boss hopes to bring another St James’ Park midfielder to East London.
West Ham are set to reignite their interest in Joey Barton.
The East Londoners are monitoring the situation regarding the controversial midfielder, who has yet to sign a new contract at Newcastle.
The Championship side discussed a move for Barton earlier this month, when the Magpies first made it clear earlier that they had made him available on a free transfer.
At the time, the Hammers’ interest in the player is said to have been described as “lukewarm”.
Barton has big fans within the boardroom at Upton Park, but would have to accept a massive cut in wages currently said to be in the region of £80,000-a-week.

This may not be as unlikely as it first seems. Joey Barton is reportedly good friends with Kevin Nolan who has moved to the Championship side and is now the club’s captain and has a property only an hour’s drive from Upton Park. Factor in that none of the Premier League big boys appear to be interested in signing the Magpies midfielder and it could well be the case that the 28 year old opts for a move to West Ham.
Sam Allardyce’s side are one of the favourites to bounce straight back up to the top flight and have started fairly well with two wins from three games.
Barton remains at Newcastle United despite being transfer listed and clearly the England hopeful still has unresolved issues in relation to the way the club is being run and may well feel that he has no choice other than to leave if he feels that owner Mike Ashley is showing no ambition and merely running the club to make money.
Ashley has barely given boss Alan Pardew a fraction of the £35m the club received for Andy Carroll and has since lost the services of Nolan and left back Jose Enrique.
