White Hart Lane boss plans Anfield raid.
Tottenham will make an ambitious attempt to land three Liverpool players if – or when – they decide to cash in on Luka Modric.
Manager Harry Redknapp is already looking to a future without the Croatian and will use the funds of his projected £35m sale to Chelsea to strenghten his squad and he hopes to do that with the signings of Joe Cole, Lucas Leiva and Dirk Kuyt.
Having spent a considerable sum on players in recent months, Liverpool could be tempted to sell – especially given their bloated midfield – though they are likely to demand more than the £25m that Spurs will offer.
This seems far fetched to say the least. Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish will be looking to trim his squad following five big additions over the summer and Harry Redknapp is similarly keen to bring in new players having spent very little on new signings this summer, however that does not mean that such a deal as quoted by this source could ever see the light of day.
Of the three Liverpool players quoted the most likely to be allowed to make such a move is Joe Cole. The 29 year old former Chelsea man is low down on the Merseyside club’s pecking order. Last term he barely got a look in once Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson and given that the club then experienced championship form clearly the England international’s absence did not affect the team.
The arrival of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing appears to have effectively ended any chance of Cole developing a meaningful career at the club and the likes of QPR and West Ham are also said to be interested in the attacking midfielder.
Lucas Leiva was arguably one of Liverpool’s best players last season and whilst it’s true that Redknapp could do with adding more strength to the centre of his midfield, hence his interest in Scott Parker, I find it hard to believe that Dalglish would consider selling the Brazilian international.
Tottenham saw Wilson Palacios experience a slump in form last term but they do have up and coming youngster Sandro to call upon but perhaps want a player with a big more experience in the central midfield position.
Dirk Kuyt is a player that Redknapp has reportedly targeted before and whilst the Dutchman may find his place on the right hand side of the midfield under threat from Jordan Henderson, again Dalglish is not likely to want to lose a player who can be so effect and often pops up with crucial goals. The former Feyenoord man was after all the club’s top scorer last term with 15 goals in all competitions.
Redknapp will hope to keep hold of Modric but is almost certainly looking to bring in new additions regardless of a potential sale of the Croatian international and is looking to trim his expansive squad in order to balance the books. Having sold Robbie Keane and Jamie O’Hara the North London side are reportedly ready to sell Giovani dos Santos, Peter Crouch, Palacios and Niko Kranjcar.
